Oklahoma Football: Brent Venables, Offensive Line Changes Highlight Spring Practice

Venables Era Begins with a Focus on the Trenches

Brent Venables has wasted no time in implementing his vision for Oklahoma football. Since his arrival in December, the new head coach has made a number of changes to the program, including a renewed focus on the offensive line.

Venables, a former defensive coordinator at Clemson, believes that a strong offensive line is essential for success in today's college football. He has brought in a new offensive line coach, Bill Bedenbaugh, who has a reputation for developing some of the best linemen in the country.

Bedenbaugh's Impact Already Evident

Bedenbaugh's impact has already been evident in spring practice. The Sooners' offensive line has shown significant improvement in both run blocking and pass protection.

In the running game, the Sooners have been able to create more holes for their running backs. This has led to an increase in production, as Oklahoma is averaging over 5 yards per carry in spring practice.

In the passing game, the Sooners' offensive line has done a better job of protecting quarterback Dillon Gabriel. Gabriel has been sacked just twice in spring practice, and he has been able to complete over 60% of his passes.

New Faces on the Offensive Line

Venables and Bedenbaugh have also brought in several new faces to the offensive line. These include transfers Anton Harrison (Texas A&M) and Wanya Morris (Tennessee) and true freshmen Jake Taylor and Robert Congel.

Harrison and Morris are both experienced players who are expected to start immediately. Taylor and Congel are both highly-touted recruits who have the potential to be future stars.

High Expectations for 2023 Season

The Sooners have high expectations for the 2023 season. They are ranked No. 7 in the preseason AP Poll and are considered to be one of the favorites to win the Big 12 Championship.

The offensive line will play a key role in the Sooners' success in 2023. If they can continue to improve, Oklahoma will be a force to be reckoned with.
