Aedes Aegypti: The Yellow Fever Mosquito
Introduction
The Aedes aegypti mosquito, also known as the yellow fever mosquito, is a species of mosquito that is native to Africa and Asia. It is a known vector of several viruses, including the yellow fever virus, dengue virus, chikungunya virus, and Zika virus.
Characteristics
- Black with white markings
- Small, about 1/4 inch in length
- Feeds during the day, especially at dawn and dusk
Transmission of Diseases
The dengue virus is transmitted to humans through the bites of infected female mosquitoes, primarily the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
When an infected mosquito bites a human, the virus enters the bloodstream and infects cells. The virus then replicates and spreads throughout the body, causing symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, nausea, and vomiting.
Symptoms of Dengue Fever
- Fever
- Headache
- Muscle and joint pain
- Nausea
- Vomiting
Prevention of Dengue Fever
There is no specific treatment for dengue fever, but symptoms can be managed with rest, fluids, and pain relievers.
The best way to prevent dengue fever is to avoid mosquito bites. This can be done by:
- Wearing long sleeves and pants when outdoors
- Using insect repellent
- Eliminating standing water around your home
